Portia Winters is a vocalist, sound artist and singing teacher. She studied at Dartington College of Arts for her BA, and at Goldsmiths College for her MMus, and trained with Meredith Monk and Maggie Nicols. She works with song (from her own to folksong and John Cage), sound art, improvisation, extended technique, poetry and electronics. Portia explores listening – as well as vocalizing – as an expressive act, and her current areas of enquiry include the voicing of the environment (and exploring how to deepen our relationship with it) and the whole-embodiment of the voice (exploring how to take the voice deeper into the physicality of the body, and vice-versa). Portia collaborates with other musicians, choreographers, film makers and visual artists, in addition to her solo work. Current projects include sound art pieces for the art book Revolve:r, to be published in 2018, Songlines of the Subtle Body, a physical enquiry collaboration with osteopath Louisa Henderson, and Starflesh, a gathering of songs and improvisations for performance and recorded release in 2018. She performs in the UK and abroad, teaches from her studio in London, and is a visiting lecturer on the voice module of the music degree at Falmouth University in Cornwall.
